Experience
I came to DKIT as a mature student on the former National Diploma in Communications and Creative Multimedia.
I spent three years at DKIT with a fantastic group of students, technical staff and lecturers. At one point we were the first group of students to occupy workshop spaces in the Carroll’s Building, where our project team was assigned our own space to work in. That project was called ‘Life in a Day’ and I am still proud of what we achieved.

DKIT invested a lot of money in making sure we were using the most up-to-date equipment and programmes available. If that level of investment continues, the institute will continue to produce graduates who are qualified to work in any new media they choose.

In the Gallery of Photography where I currently work, we take on interns interested in photography and all of them agree it’s a great insight into life outside college. I strongly recommend it. Find out what you would like to work at, where and then go and volunteer to learn. It will always count as experience.

After graduating from DKIT I continued to work freelance as a photographer and graphic designer while living in Dublin and completing my BA (Hons) Degree in ITT. I went directly from DKIT to ITT to complete a Bachelor of Arts in Audio Visual Media. It was a one-year (add on) degree and was a big change of pace after spending the previous three years in Dundalk. Three of us from the multimedia course in DKIT made the transition to ITT that year. What we had learned in DKIT previously had prepared us more than adequately to adapt to the next level.

In 2005 I successfully completed my Master of Science degree in Interactive Media at the University of Limerick. I was awarded a First Class Honours for my thesis project entitled ‘Introvertive Media’ which developed a bio feedback assisted relaxation-training device and was ranked among the top 5% of projects the Interaction Design Centre has had over the past 5 years.

Once I finished college I moved back to Dublin and got a job with Ashville Media on the Digital Media Awards as a researcher. It was a good experience in terms of networking within the sector but was not a job with great prospects. I wanted to do something I enjoyed while making some of what I had learnt in college work for me.

The Gallery of Photography is Ireland's leading centre for contemporary photography. I began working for the Gallery of Photography as a tutor immediately after completing my masters and moving back to Dublin. I was subsequently promoted to my current full time position working as part of a small team as Administrator and Digital Arts Manager.
I play a lead role in managing and developing the Gallery of Photography's Digital Studio, a new resource for artists and photographers working in digital media.

DKIT was the first step on the road to where I am today. I had a wonderful experience while studying there and learning the tools of my trade. New digital media techniques are very exciting and always interesting. There is no such thing as a typical day for me. Everyday is different depending on the focus of the project. I really do love my work right now and especially look forward to what the future holds.

Thanks for the memories, DKIT!
