Media and Society: Elective Module
This module aims to situate debates about the mass media and their undisputed influence on contemporary society within the context of a number of historical and sociological frameworks. Complementing what the students already know about the production of meaning through media texts and images, this programme will highlight some key aspects of the media’s social and political roles, emphasizing the relationship between knowledge and power, and encouraging the students to critically analyse media constructions and representations.
Taking Ireland as a case-study, the students will debate the role played by the media in the modernization of our culture and society, their representation and rewriting of traditional historical and nationalist narratives, and the necessity of redefining Irish identity in a post modern world increasingly dominated by new interactive media.
