Interview with Dennis Cummins (Director, DKIT)

An interview was conducted with Denis Cummins on the 22nd of September ‘06.
Mr. Cummins gave an overview of many aspects of the Multimedia department and its future.

Overall what is the future for Multimedia at DKIT?
The Multimedia course can be seen as the core of the whole department, many other courses have a strong strain of multimedia in them for example we hope to include a Games design course in which its 2/3 design and 1/3 technology. Therefore we hope to put a lot of investment into this particular course, to help strengthen the set skills needed in the workplace for our students. A lot of research has gone into the department and a five-year re-evaluation has been written up. Every five years these overviews are created so that we can look into creating a better learning and social environment for the students and lecturers alike.

We heard that the Multimedia course was going to become a separate department from music and computing, is this true?
Yes actually it is, the college believes in keeping department numbers small (400 or less) in order for the college departments to grow at the same level. There are four departments at the moment but it will be expanded over the next four/five years to include one more. The department of Music and Creative Media will be separated from computing, as these courses are extremely popular and are growing in popularity. Any more then 300/400 students lecturing abilities become less effective. We have already been advertising for more staff etc.

The Carroll’s Building is being refurbished what can you tell us about it?
20 million is being invested into the Carroll’s building. It is to incorporate both the multimedia and music students so they can work together on projects etc. At the moment this isn’t possible because the music students are in Key Tronics, this isn’t what we envisaged for the courses, and we want them to work together.

And what about the actual Building?
It is being designed by the same person who created the Nursing Building. It is to be about 2/3 times the size of the Nursing building and equipped with all your labs and more, lecture halls and recording studios. We are putting all your needs into the building, so that the students can work to the best of their ability. The first draft of Carroll’s can be seen in the foyer.
